We offer so many hands-on science activities for everybody!!!

MYGEMS designed this scientific enrichment program based upon the North Carolina Standard Course of Study or for those families that are homeschooling their children, MYGEMS will design a course specific to your needs. The programs that are offered to schools, parents, churches, after school programs, day care centers and community centers are all great places to explore the wonders of science. MYGEMS is a hands-on activity oriented organization that is designed to meet your needs.

These programs allow all students, parents and others to explore science using hands-on learning and engaging in an exciting, yet uncomplicated manner, which can also be done at home.

Fantastic Fridays during the fall!

The schedule for classes begins on Friday, September 12th  for parents, preschools, homeschools, and other organizations that would like to  participate in all of the fun and excitement with science experiments.  Our programs are scheduled for every week until Friday, December 5th. 

All day care providers, preschools, homeschools, babysitters and even parents of children ages 3 and up are invited to attend either a one hour or 1.5 hour session with T.K. the Chemist.  They will be treated with fun, excitement and laughter.

You come to us, then:

The cost is only $6.50 per child for groups of 10 or more children.  Less than 10 children, the price is $8.00 per child.  If you would like to add another package or allow your group to watch a short science film, then there is an additional cost of $3.50 per child.

We come to you, then:

The cost is only $7.00 per child for groups of 10 children or more.  Less than 10 children, you will be billed at the rate of $100.00.  If you would like to add another package, then there is an additional cost of $3.50 per child.

The cost includes:

• Your choice of the specific packaged hands-on science activities. 
  
• A follow up worksheet to take home
• *A snack
• *A class photo with T.K the Chemist
  *Not included if we come to you.
  

Need Lunch?  Just add $4.00 per child.  You have a choice of either:

• A hot dog, chips and drink  OR
• 2 slices of pizza and a drink

If you prefer to bring your groups' lunch, please let us know so that we are able to allocate a 30 minute lunch period for your group.  Your group will be charged a $75 clean up fee if the center is left in deplorable conditions.  Please make sure that your group pick up all trash, napkins, milk/drink cartons, etc. after lunch.

     Friday Night Science Program

6:00 pm - 9:00 pm 

Children ages 7-12 can enjoy an evening of fun and exciting hands science activities at the MYGEMS Science Center while the parents are out having fun of their own. Boy/Girl Scouts, Church youth groups and other youth organizations can spend the evening at the MYGEMS Science Center also. They will enjoy all of the following activities for only $15.00 per person (siblings and youth group organizations pay only $12.00)

Note: All parents are required to sign in/sign out your child or group. No exceptions! You must also be on time for the program so we will not run over time and the children can enjoy their entire evening. We value your time so please have them present no later than 6:10 pm.

This fee covers:

• Hands-on science activities/demonstrations
• Watch a science movie
• Science games
• Hot dogs or pizza
  
• a drink (juice or bottled water)
  

Parents, if your child has food allergies,
please notify the staff of the MYGEMS Science Center.

Payments for any of these events are due the Thursday before the scheduled Friday night event. If the classes have not filled up by the close of the business day on Thursday, then the Friday Night Science Class will be cancelled. Refunds will be given to cancelled classes but not for missed sessions. You can apply the day missed to a follow up class within one week. Pre-registration can be done either by email: TKTHECHEMIST@MYGEMSFORKIDS.COM or come by the center during our hours of operation to register your child(ren) or group. *All programs require pre-registration by the Thursday of the scheduled Friday Night Science Program.  Drop-Ins are welcomed, but the fee increases to $20 per child.

Parents get ready for our Winter Friday Night Science Program in December.  We will also have Winter Science Camps for children who want to get out the house and have fun with science experiments.  We will also have our Parents Day Out Program for those of you who have last minute shopping to do during the holidays!

We will post our December schedule no later than November 21st.

You may pre-register your child or group online, but payment must be made at least two weeks prior to the registered date and time.  You may mail your payment to MYGEMS, P.O. Box 5920, Concord, NC 28027. 

Types of Programs available

Your group can choose from an assortment of programs to meet the needs of your organization. Some of the programs are designed for school aged groups of fewer than 25 participants while other groups may want an assembly which will accomodate 150 students. We provide more than 25 hands-on science activities. The topics include: Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Forensic Science, Paleontology, and many more. Each of the labs are designed for grades PreK through middle school.

2.	MYGEMS Sci-Ice-Cream		Students will make ice cream and determine both the physical and chemical characteristics behind the experiment.		4-8
3.	Measure Treasures		This activity will introduce students to the metric system. They will measure, weigh and calculate the mass of different objects.		1-8
4.	Jumping Worms		Discover what happens when students create gas bubbles with household items.		K-2
5.	Density Rama		Students will use the science process skills to discover the density of different liquids and how each liquid interacts in specific ways. They will make a density wand that glows in the dark.		3-8
6.	MYGEMS Glow in the Dark Slime Time		Students will be introduced to the properties of matter in this gooey substance. They will make slime in their favorite color and explore those properties.		K-5
7.	Toxic Chemicals		You will carry out a series of chemical and physical tests on a series of white powders, one of which represents a hazardous material. You will identify the “mystery spill”.		2-8
8.	Life in the pond		Examine water samples from the lake or pond for life through a microscope. Then conduct a water quality test for pH, total water hardness, and alkalinity.		2-8
9.	Rainbow Milk		Milk looks plain, but students will discover that milk has some amazing properties that are shown with a few household items.		K-4
10.		The Sixth Sense		Students will be put through a series of test to use all five of their senses for observation.	K-2
11.		Food Detectives		Determine the nutrient content of different food items by performing a series of tests to identify starch, protein, fat, iron and vitamin C in the various foods we eat. *Each child will juice his/her favorite fruit or vegetable with a juicer.	K-8
12.		ROY G. BIV		This is a colorful activity that will test precision and ability to follow directions with simulated “chemicals” from the lab.	2-4
13. Very Popular		Cast from the past		Learn how dinosaurs survived and how they once roamed the earth. Watch a demonstration using plaster of Paris and other scientific devices to create a dinosaur’s tooth replica. Students will make dinosaur candy as a special treat.	1-8
14.		The Rock Detective		Analyze rock samples and determine their physical and chemical compositions. Students will learn the rock cycle and understand the various types of rocks known to mankind.	K-8
15.		Separate and Unequal		How long does it take for an egg, oil, and vinegar to separate? Will they form one liquid layer or two? You decided.	K-3
16.		Edible Molecules		The students will build a water molecule that they will eat after they study the two chemical elements found in water. They will also make their own special formula from the periodic table.	2-8
17.	Rainbow Chromatography		Have you ever wondered how many colors can actually come from one blue M&M? Or a blue ink pen? Learn how to separate the colors of a piece of candy or pen, using techniques many scientists use in research labs.		2-8
18. Great for building math skills	Mmmm Mmmm Good		Which color is the most popular in a bag of M&Ms or Skittles. Grab a bag and find out. Using basic math skills, the students will graph their data and report it.		K-5
19. Very Popular	Stars and Stripes Explorer		Explore the solar system and learn some interesting facts using 3-D glasses and watching a spectacular light show. You will also get to sample astronaut ice cream.		K-8
20.	DNA Genes		Where can you find DNA? Everywhere! You will extract DNA from food samples and perform a series of simulated tests to determine the correct match of DNA results.		4-8
21. Very Popular	T-Rex		Learn how dinosaurs survived and how they once roamed the earth. The students will be able to make dinosaur stamps and dig for fossils to take home. They will also examine rare fluorescent minerals that glow in the dark.		K-8
22. NEW	MYGEMS Chemistry Sampler		Balloons can be magical if the right potion is mixed with special powders. Watch colors magically change right before your eyes as chemicals are mixed together for a surprising outcome. Learn the secrets behind CO2. Play with magical bubbles, watch pennies burn and so much more!		K-8
23. NEW	SPA Chemistry		Learn how to make colorful soap and bath salts with a nice fruity fragrance. You will understand the science behind these relaxing concoctions.		6-8
24.	Solar Power Pizza		Make a solar powered oven and cook some of your favorite foods. You will be able to understand just how powerful the sun really is.		3-8 *Weather permits
25. High in Demand	CSI with MYGEMS		This popular lab involves intense critical thinking skills. Students will be able to solve a mystery involving handwriting analysis, observation skills, simulated blood samples and much, much more.		6-8
26.	UV Detectors		Make your own UV detector with beads that change colors depending on the sun’s conditions. Learn about protecting your skin from the sun.		3-8 *Weather permits
27.	Ice Cube Counting		Using a scientific tool, the students will be able to change colors and watch magical bubbles appear as they conduct the experiments.		K-2
28.	Bugs R Us		Students will be able to try on a special pair of “bug” glasses to see how they look at objects. Learn interesting facts about bugs and get special glow sticks to see why fire flies light up.		3-5
29.	Tie-Dye Chemistry		Use inexpensive products in your kitchen to learn the chemistry behind the process of tie-dyeing fabrics.		K-8
30.	MIX and Match		This is available upon special request. You will pick any *two activities and combine them into one session. These sessions chosen will have to be selected to fit within the class time session.		K-8
